New EMG 81
ARTIX 03.10.2017
->Short:
Having two modes (single-coil & dual-coil) and being an active pickup for bridge as well as for neck position, it shreds ;)

Pros:
+ Sound
+ Very easy to mount
+ GAIN!
Cons:
~ Size
- Not cheap

->Long:
Before buying, measure the "hole" where pickup goes.
Height of this pickup can be troublesome when trying to insert it where it doesn't fit.

---> Package
In small but full package you get the pickup (duh), manual, tone knob, volume knob, cables, output jack, screws, and stuff.
Manual's structure and presentation is well made, it's in color and shows how to connect to already existing circuit.

---> Installation
Installation is fairly easy. Just follow the manual. Thanks to their "connector system" connecting parts together is piece of cake. Remove old pickup, insert new one, plug the cables in (you can choose default position for the knob, single-coil or dual-coil) (soldering may be needed when connecting to a switch), screw the screws, tighten the knobs and you are done.

---> Sound
I'm not a snob, but the difference between old pickup and new one was astonishing. Clarity, the smoothness and Signal-to-noise ratio differences speaks for themselves. In neck position it has insane high output, it can drive the clean channel on my amp without a problem, but at lower volumes it stays very clear. On the lead channel it has this "I'm melting your face" kind of tone, which is incredible. On single-coil mode (double-single-coil-humbucker mode or whatever it is called) it has same very low noise but way different sound, this very typical single coil sound without hummmmm.
In bridge position it has more of this tightness and "mid-range'y" punch.
Drives the amp without any problems and at high gain it has this "umpf" when palm muting those solos. Simply said "it does metal very good and it shreds".

Pure Awesomenesss

I used it on My schecter C1 FR replacing the EMG 81TW ,
I love the split sound it has when u use the 3rd single coil and also has more dynamics and responds better to lower volume playing.
Overall is closer to a passive pick up but with the bite of the EMG in humbucker mode.

A lovely device just sounds quieter on single-mode which is normal.

un EMG 81... en mieux !!!
Guillaume T. 02.03.2014
