EMG 89XR Black

whatever you can say of this, is what you can say to its 89X sibling, which is (from both design and construction perspective) the exact same pickup, but turned 180 degrees to have the "single-coil" setting place the vertically-stacked bobbins placed as close to the end of neck, hence "r"everted.

but, in this design concept, there's room for a little more experimental survey: i've swapped the two siblings, so that now the "single" coil isn't the closer to neck and the closer to bridge, but the other way around... it makes the bridge pickup a tad softer in tone, and the neck pickup a tad more discreet in its mid-low frequently range... it's kind of an hommage to where MusicMan placed its single pickup on the now iconic Stingray bass, and similarly pointing to a smoother hue of tonal color.

the pair of 89X and 89XR now fits a small-bodied archtop guitar primarily meant for jazz style... all the traditional voicings are there, with this EMG pair, along with Fender-ized vintage staples immediately recognizable as Strat- and Tele-like.

I put this pickup in the neck position of my Jackson Kelly J32. The bridge pickup is an EMG81TW-X. The combination of the two provides a very versatily range of sounds.

In the "single coil" mode you get a start kind of sound. I also own a stratocaster with EMG-S pickups. If I compare them the sound is very different. However, I don't think that is a fair comparison. For versatilty the EMG89XR is a good choice.

In the "humbucket" mode you get a very warm and open sound, compared to one of my guitars with an EMG60 in the neck. Again, the sound is very different. I would describe the EMG60 to be more "cold" sounding and more compressed. This is of course exactly what they tried to do with the X-Series, a warmer, more open sound.

In both pickup modes you will get the classic EMG charasterics with the "snappy" attack on the strings.

The installation, as with all EMG pickups is very easy with the solderless installationn.

Overall a very good pickup and in combination with the EMG81TW-X in the neck you will have a wide range of sounds.

Im Zusammenhang mit einem Umbauprojekt (Ibanez RGA42) habe ich mir diesen (Neck) und den EMG81X (Bridge) Tonabnehmer sowie einen Three-Way-Switch gekauft, um den Sound meiner Gitarre vielseitiger und aussagekräftiger zu gestalten.

Einbau:
Der Einbau der EMG Tonabnehmer war aufgrund des Solderlesssystems und der beigelegten Anleitung weitestgehend problemlos. EMG bietet online zahlreiche Anleitungen für verschiedene Verbindungsoptionen an, weshalb man in jedem Fall fündig wird. Selbst wenn man die Tonabnehmer nicht richtig verbindet, lässt sich dies aufgrund des Solderlesssystems gut beheben.

Für mich, der zuvor noch keine Tonabnehmer verbaut hat, war der Einbau gut machbar, weshalb man keine Angst haben sollte - das Solderlesssystem ist hier wirklich zuvorkommend.

Zu beachten gelten jedoch zwei Dinge:
(1) Aufgrund des Solderlesssystems haben die Kabel an ihren Enden Steckverbindungen (siehe Bilder). Diese Steckverbindungen haben eine gewisse Breite, weshalb sie nicht durch jedes vorgebohrte Loch der Gitarre passen - v.a. dann nicht, wenn zuvor keine EMG's verbaut waren. Es kann dazu führen, dass Löcher vergrößert werden müssen oder man bei der Verlegung kreativ werden muss.
Dies ist jedoch nicht der Fehler von EMG, dennoch sollte es beachtet werden.

(2) Auch wenn EMG ihr Produkt als "solderless" bewirbt, stimmte dies in meinem Fall nicht. Das Problem liegt in der beigelegten Klinkenbuchse, die nicht in jede Gitarre passt. Viele Gitarren besitzen eine "long barrel" Klinkenbuchse, die deutlich länger (ca. 50 mm) und dünner ist, als die, die EMG mit dem Tonabnehmer verkauft. Dies führt dazu, dass die Verbindungen an die Klinkenbuchse nicht gesteckt werden können, sondern verlötet werden müssen. Dementsprechend ist der Mehrwert des Solderlesssystems an dieser Stelle stark gemindert, weshalb ich einen Stern abziehen muss.

In der Anleitung des Tonabnehmers weisen EMG auf die mögliche Abweichung hin, was an dieser Stelle jedoch schon zu spät ist. Es empfiehlt sich für v.a. unerfahrene Bastler vorher zu prüfen, welche Klinke die Gitarre besitzt, damit man keine bösen Überraschungen erlebt. Alternativ sollte diese "Einschränkung" in der Produktbeschreibung erwähnt werden.

Sound:
Der Sound des Tonabnehmers entspricht meinen Erwartungen, sodass meine Gitarre einen neuen Charakter erhalten hat und nun deutlich vielseitiger klingt. Sowohl im Metalgenre als auch darüber hinaus hat der Tonabnehmer seine Berechtigung. Besonders die Single-Coil-Option lässt viel Spielraum offen. Insgesamt eine tolle Ergänzung für meinen Sound!

Somit ist der Tonabnehmer für jeden zu empfehlen, der gerne Genregrenzen überschreitet und einen flexiblen Sound möchte.

EMG a sorti ici la version X du fameux 89, un préampli plus ouvert et naturel.
C'est honnêtement un des meilleurs micros de chez EMG, now avons la chaleur et la puissance du 85X et le cristallin du SA-X. La différence ici est que les plots sont inversés et donc proches du manche quand on est en mode single.
On obtient donc le côté très pur et droit des amateurs de Stratocasters...
Je n'ai jamais vraiment compris l'aversion pour ces micros actifs : ici EMG réussit la prouesse d'obtenir un son sans parasites, et suffisamment ouverts pour paraître " passifs"
C'est vrai que la série X gomme une compression parfois trop importante sur les "anciens", mais EMG, ce n'est pas que le 81 !!
Étonnamment, c'est un micro qui peut s'installer aussi en bridge et ainsi simuler un single coil en position intermédiaire.
Micro d'une polyvalence incroyable. On peut passer du blues au funk rock en passant par le gros métal bien poilu évidemment.
Bref, pour moi c'est un sans fautes, ne pas oublier le 89X qui est aussi extrêmement intéressant.
Il m'en a fait oublier ce cher 81 qui, en excellant dans le domaine du gros son, manquait quand même cruellement de polyvalence.
