As solid as they come

These days, a solid spruce top is no longer an unaffordable luxury when buying an acoustic guitar. An almost unique feature at this price point, however - and one usually reserved for instruments in the four-digit price category - is the hardshell case included in the scope of delivery. The Fender CD-140SCE offers both, and more besides: A cutaway for unrestricted access to the upper registers, a pickup system for live use, a built-in tuner that will prove invaluable even when playing unplugged, and last but not least, a large dreadnought body with an attractive sunburst finish, which combines sonic versatility with eyecatching looks. And it should come as no surprise that this guitar also comes complete with a set of Fender's warm-sounding bronze strings.

A classic design with modern features

The most decisive element when it comes to the sound of a steel acoustic guitar is its top, which in the case of the Fender CD-140SCE is made from solid spruce - a wood that, just like the abilities of the player, matures and gets better over time. The back and sides are made from dark-coloured ovangkol, and the mahogany neck features a walnut fingerboard with a nut width of 43mm, which should make it comfortable enough for electric guitarists as well. The onboard pickup system mentioned above is made by Fishman and powered by a 9V battery, and the guitar can be kept safe from knocks and scrapes with the included hardshell case, which can also be locked for added security.

A few extras, perhaps?

The Fender CD-140SCE bridges the gap between the "beginner" and "mid-priced" segments, which makes it a great choice for newcomers looking for a solid instrument to get started on and for more advanced players looking to upgrade from a beginner's guitar to a model with a solid top that they can also use on stage. Electric guitarists who are on the hunt for an acoustic guitar to add to their arsenal and want a "brand-name" instrument for live use should also take a look. The fact that the CD-140SCE is intended for the stage is reflected in the fact that it comes with two strap buttons (one on the bottom edge and one on the upper shoulder), a much more secure option than tying the top end of the strap to the headstock when performing.

About Fender

Fender is without doubt one of the most legendary guitar and amplifier manufacturers of all time. The company was founded in 1946 by its namesake Leo Fender († 1991), whose innovative ideas brought a breath of fresh air into the musical world. His Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass, and Jazz Bass are not only classics – they also continue to shape the styles of musicians in countless genres to this day. Timeless Fender amplifier models such as the Bassman, Twin, Deluxe, and Princeton also enjoy a stellar reputation. Besides maintaining its classic product portfolio, however, the company is also constantly developing new products that make Fender a driving force in today’s music industry.

A detailed view

The abbreviation "CD" in the Fender CD-140SCE's name stands for "Classic Design". And the designation is well deserved - after all, guitars have been built in the "dreadnought" shape for more than 100 years as a way to achieve a louder sound. In fact, using this kind of large body size was originally the only way to amplify the instrument. The letters "SCE" in turn stand for "Solid Top", "Cutaway", and "Electric", respectively indicating that the guitar features a top made from solid wood, a cutaway for improved access to its upper registers, and a pickup system to allow the guitar to be amplified the modern way. When played unplugged, this guitar therefore delivers plenty of volume and the full sound that only a solid top can provide, and it can also be plugged in and amplified for use on stage. And the included hardshell case will ensure that it is kept safe from knocks and scrapes during transport and storage.

Great beginner guitar - bright sound and beautiful to look at.
kagx 15.11.2022
I'm a beginner guitar player and i wanted a decent guitar that i would love to learn and improve my skills. I initially we to a store to play multiple guitars and see what would work for me before ordering one. my rating is based on nearly 8 months of use of this guitar (5 days a week, 45 minutes per day of playing).

1. playability - This was the main criteria for me as a beginner, i used to have a lot of difficult in changing chords and moving quickly between frets with my old cheap guitar. I realized that the setup on this guitar was much better and lower, the neck is thinner and feels more comfortable in the hands making it easy to move around the fretboard.
2. Sound - The guitar sounds really bright and feels nice to the ears. the guitar stays in tune even when i don't play for a few days (holidays). The original strings are not rusted and dull even after 8 months of playing but i do take a bit of care like i wash hands before playing, I apply GHS fast fret before and after playing and always keep the guitar in the case.
3. Look and feel - The triple sunburst color is amazing. It simply shines in comparison to single color options and the pick guard helps keep the scratches away from the body.
4. the guitar came with a really nice hard case - which itself would be over a 100 Euros. The case is strong and can protect the guitar from most dings and small falls. It also has a storage box that can hold a set of strings, plectrums, string winder and fast fret for me.
5. Features: The guitar comes with a built-in pickup and tuner. I have not tested the pickup as I do not have an amp to test the pickup yet. The tuner works accurately when compared to a standard clip-on tuner.
6. build quality: the Guitar seems to be built well and had no noticeable imperfections for me. The packaging / shipping was also good.

Overall, If you are a beginner or an intermediate player, I would think this guitar would be really good to buy. It seems to be priced higher than most other guitars but considering the fact that the guitar has a solid wood top(spruce) and neck (Mahagony) and a walnut fretboard it falls into the intermediate quality guitars. Since it also comes with a hard case, it's a good deal. I considered this as an investment for learning and loving to play an instrument and paying a little extra is probably going to pay itself over the years.

CD140 Fender Acoustic
Scottuz! 07.01.2022
had been looking for an upgrade to my cheap as chips roundback acoustic, i'd had for years, and originally bought a different guitar, that was sent back and in the end I chose this model, as the deal with a hardcase swung it in its favour, but so pleasantly surprised at just how nice the guitar is now?
when it first came out the case, it sounded out slightly?!? intonation not quite right?! but a new set of strings, and a quick fret polish later, and its lovely and is bedding in really nice as time passes too, which is always a plus, so if you're looking around this price point, don't think too hard, and get this instrument, you'll be happy you did, if upgrading like i did?
my roundback sounds like a plastic toy now, after playing the Fender?
OH YEAH!!! the smell, every time i open the case, and pick it out, and put it on my knee, the beautiful aroma comes from the sound hole? OMG it's intoxicating? Also have recently swapped out the tiny plastic 3mm Slotted, bridge pins, for a Un slotted, bone 5mm set, and cut the string slots, into the Bridge-block. what a change??? 100% of the string energy now goes into the bridge, and not the pins

Good sounding guitar
Stalko 30.09.2021
Since I ordered this guitar till arrival date I though it made in Indonesia (as illustrated on the pictures). But when I unpacked it and tried to play, I have understood and could see it made in China. Chinese frets are made really nicely, but not the same as Indonesians. But in total this acoustic guitar is made beautifully, very good quality and it sounds amazingly straight and through the line!

Had to return it.
Knopfler55 13.02.2022
I ordered this guitar a year ago and didn't play it much. It was sitting on a guitar rack for a year and now that I played it again, some frets had become unplayable. The wood has become very dry and the strings are hard to play. The fret issue made me not even want to change new strings to it and I decided to contact their customer service. According to the three year guarantee, I hope I'm able to return it and receive compensation. Wouldn't really recommend, based on this experience.
