Solid wood - solid sound

Harley Benton CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood guitar with cutaway and pickup system, front view

If there is one phrase that is sure to get acoustic guitarists’ attention, then it has to be “all-solid” – after all, guitars made completely from solid wood are synonymous with a lively, characterful tone. The downside, however, is that such guitars usually come with an equally luxurious price tag as well. With the CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood, however, Harley Benton is now proving that this doesn’t have to be the case. This dreadnought features a top made from solid Grade A American cedar, while its back and sides are made from solid Gabon mahogany, which is also called okoume. What is more, the CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood also features a Fishman Sonicore/Presys-II pickup system complete with an integrated chromatic tuner, while a set of Grover machine heads as well as a GraphTech TUSQ nut and bridge saddle further enhance the guitar's already impressive range of features.

Equipped for full control

The dreadnought, which is one of the largest acoustic guitar shapes, has gained immense popularity for its sound, and Harley Benton has used this design as the template for the CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood. The guitar's solid American cedar top features scalloped X-bracing and gives it a bright-sounding tone and a very direct attack, while the solid Gabon mahogany body provides a crisp and controlled response. This combination results in a very well balanced overall sound that is particularly suitable for strumming, though single-note picking and melodies will also shine with plenty of presence and sustain. What is more, the CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood comes strung with a set of high-quality D'Addario strings, and its outstanding sound can be reproduced with complete authenticity through an amplifier or PA system thanks to the Fishman pickup system.

Sturdy build quality, outstanding sound

The Harley Benton CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood is clearly an instrument for musicians of all levels who want to get the most out of every note they play. It is designed to cut through in the mix and provide excellent dynamics - particularly when amplified via the onboard pickup system. The guitar's okoume neck - complete with a 20-fret pau ferro fingerboard - is slightly wider than usual with a nut width of 44.5mm (1.75") and thus provides comfortable string spacing for more sophisticated playing techniques. And while the price may have been rolled back, no compromise has been made in terms of quality, so all fans of the classic dreadnought design should take a closer look at the CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

The audience is listening

Thanks to its solid-wood construction, the Harley Benton CLD-30SCM-CE SolidWood will always provide plenty of volume, even in smaller setups without a microphone or amplifier, which makes it perfect for musical styles that require a full-sounding acoustic rhythm accompaniment, whether it's around the campfire or busking in the street. Should the audience be large enough to require a little more volume, however, the CLD-30SCM-CE's onboard Fishman pickup system can take over, allowing the guitar's excellent sound to be amplified through an acoustic amp or PA. And last but not least, the integrated chromatic tuner is perfect for making any necessary tuning adjustments in between songs.

A Good quality guitar.
David D. 874 25.01.2016
I received the guitar today. I seen only one review so I wasn't sure but the spec was good so I gave it a chance. First impression is very good. The sound rings out. It's a very resonant guitar. The notes really chime.

The wood on the top is not coloured in any way. It will take time for the light to bring out its real colour at the moment it's a little pale. I know time will darken it and I'm sure it will be vibrant. I can see it's a nice piece of wood. The sides and back are good quality. It's obvious it's solid wood.

The neck has a satin finish which I like its a nice modern c shape. The action was as good as any guitar I have seen from new. I only lowered it a tiny amount for it to be perfect for me.

On another point I noted that the binding is really nice. Another review said it only has a few red flecks. Mine has a really nice tortoise pattern.

The inside shows a high level of attention to detail. No glue residue or spills. If I have any complaint it's a small one. The label inside the sound hole could be nicer. It's too plain and looks like it was printed on a home PC.

Looks like I had the first X-mas turkey..
Anonymous 25.09.2016
After reading all the raving reviews about this guitar and knowing that it is an all solid body my expectations were quite high.

The guitar arrived in 4 days, all great on Thomann?s side.

Appearance:
The finish is beautiful, the guitar looks very tame in the photos but up close it?s very arrtactive. I found no blemishes at all, perfect condition.

Set-up:
Action was well set up and guitar is relatively comfortable t play considering the wider neck of 45mm.
However!! I immediately noticed a buzzing on the upper strings, D, A, E! It appears that cetrain notes - specifically the Es cause a resonance and buzzing within the guitar. I brought it to a lutier who adjusted the action and played around a bit but it did not fix this problem.

Unfortunately, as is the guitar is unplayable and I will send it back to THomann.

Sound:
Considering it is a full body and using the daddario exp16 I must say I am disappointed especially on the bass side.
The highs have great sustain, if you play a slow solo it almost seems like you are using a reverb pedal on them.
However, the bass strings sound very flat and are lacking the body I wanted.
Admittedly I haven?t changed the strings, as I did not want to make that investment considering I will send the guitar back, but still I feel like they might not be the problem...

Hardware:
I have not plugged in the guitar, so I cannot opine on that, but I am not a fan of this tuner. It does not seem all that accurate and I far prefer the tuner on a guitar such as the Epiphone ej200ce.

All in all, I genuinely hope this was merely bad luck as I expected a higher quality and good setup on HB?s part.

Beautiful guitar, exellent quality of producing. Sounds heavenly, just the bass end is little bit weak. Little bit wider neck and the cutaway makes the fingerpicking much easyer and the guitar very suitabe for me.
I just can not understand why to complete so gorgeous instrument with cheap plastic bridge pins?

I can't stress out enough how amazing this guitar is
Medvedotron 20.02.2019
If you want an acoustic but you don't know if you're going to love it, just buy this one. For the price of a bad laminated guitar you're getting an amazing solid body instrument. It's nicely done, quite well set up and it resonates like a guitar three times the price. I really wanted to complain about it but I wasn't able to find a single good reason why to not recommend this guitar. Harley Benton did some amazing job here and I think it's a real gateway to good instruments.

Don't forget that you'll need to buy a case.
