A real Rock bass for a low price!

front of the electric bass guitar Harley Benton MB-4 SBK Deluxe Series

Harley Benton instruments have long been known to provide high quality for experienced musicians and as well as beginners on a budget. The Harley Benton MB-4 SBK Deluxe Series electric bass is no exception and sports the typical Rock bass design with solid woods, a humbucker with coil-split function, and a modern matte black finish, which has been added to the range by popular demand, and all that at a rock bottom price. The bolt-on maple neck with its slim D-profile and six-screw neck joint ensures both a comfortable playing feel and good sustain, and thus the best possible resonance characteristics.

Plenty of punch

A poplar body and a bolt-on maple neck form the basis for this bass that feels particularly at home in Rock and Heavy music - where power and punch are indispensable. The humbucker, housed in a tortoiseshell-look pickguard, harmonises perfectly with this particular combination. Both coils can be activated separately via a switch, which like the volume and tone pots is located on the black control plate. Thanks to the slim D-profile of the maple neck with its 21-fret fingerboard, the Harley Benton MB-4 SBK Deluxe Series is also pleasant and comfortable to play, which makes entry into the world of bass a lot easier, especially for beginners or those who are making the transition to the low end.

Affordable bass for beginners

With its affordable price, the Harley Benton MB-4 SBK Deluxe Series electric bass is aimed primarily at beginners who have to get by on a small budget - because an amplifier is also part of a successful start, and that has to be paid for somehow. However, you get a lot of bass for your hard-earned savings here, and your first sessions can definitely start with a cool sound! But advanced players might also find the MB-4 Deluxe Series Bass in Satin Black an ideal backup instrument for the rehearsal room and stage - after all, they get an inexpensive bass that knows how to make itself heard in a band setting and looks good to boot.

I like it
StephanPK 10.12.2021
When I first seen this bass, I instantly liked the look. I bought it to be my experimental platform for flatwound strings, and intended to change the pickup straight away. But the stock pickup sounds fine to me, and an overall quality is very good, so I decided not to modify anything.
For this price it is really hard to beat.

Update - I installed a push pull for a series-parallel connection of the coils. This humbucker has 4 wires, so you could easily do it. It has the same color wires as seymour duncan, so just look for the wiring diagram on seymour duncan website, called Jazz Bass series wiring. As it seems, it was wired a parallel before, hence the output was average. Now it has also an additional "real" humbucker sound. Highly recommended and easy mode.

G
Epic bass!
Glenondabass 21.09.2023
The HB was really well put together. It was playable straight out of the box. Almost every bass I’ve ever bought needed a few tweaks to make it right, and the HB was no exception. The main tweak was the action (string height) at the nut…each string slot needed a little file to lower the string (being careful to not go too low!). It took about 10 minutes and made a huge difference. I took it on a session together with my Status Retro Jazz…an unfair comparison as the Status cost 35 times the HB. The HB was more than adequate; it had the honky sound of a Stingray, it sat well, with no neck dive, smooth frets, a slightly fatter neck profile than the Jazz…a joy to play. A P bass sounds like a P bass, a J bass sounds like a J bass, and the HB sounds like a Stingray. It’s a great looking bass, nice and light. Un-be-f8cking-lievable at this price. Couple of negatives: the pole pieces in the pickup protrude a little more than I’d like, and the tuners feel cheap (but the bass stayed in tune all day). I’ve played £500 basses that are not as good as this. At £119 (UK price Sept 2023) I might just get a few more to match my clothes.

P
Best value for money going.
Pebble 24.08.2021
I bought this due to wanting a stingray-style bass for a few years now, but not having the money to be able to splash out on an expensive ray34 or some other options, and I'd heard good things about Harley Benton basses.
What I'd heard was not wrong.
This bass is very well made, frets are nice and smooth, everything feels solid. The action out of the box was rather high but a few adjustments made it a dream to play.
The tuners hold tune very well, the feel of the bass is excellent and personally the visuals are fantastic.
The sound is very stingray-esque, great for funk and slap. I can't detect any hum or buzzing when playing through headphones/an amp.
The only negative is that the tone knob is rather sensitive and uneven as you turn the tone down.
The fact that this bass is £107, and being the quality that it is, is ridiculously good.
I would've killed for a bass like this when I was first learning to play.
Highly recommended.

S
Surprisingly good!
Sandracer 28.05.2024
I've played bass for 36 years and have owned some real nice basses over the years - mainly Rickenbackers. I've always liked the look of the Stingray basses and noticed the Harley Benton MB4. To be honest, for the price, I wasn't expecting much, but having received it today I can honestly say that I'm blown away! The quality seems great! No blemishes out of the box - it's perfect. I immediately put some black round-wound strings on it (I like black strings) and tuned it up, plugged it in and gave it a blast... It's got a lovely 'growl' to it and it feels great to play. The only negative I can find is that the action is a little too high for my liking, but that's an easy fix.
If I had paid twice or three times the money for this then I would still be impressed!!
