I use these for two of our church drum kits. (18", 24")
Set up is simple and quicker than I imagined, the bungee system is effective in isolating the mic and it feels very secure. The composite 'shoe' is solid and I have no fears there either.
This has sped up our set up time, and it keeps things simple for our team of amateur musicians and engineers. One of the main benefits is that I can save a channel strip on our digital desk, safe in the knowledge that the mic placement remains the same.
I think it excels in smaller kick drums. Placing the mic in the centre of our 18x14' kick totally shifted the sound and gives much more thump than I would normally expect from a 'kick-in' microphone. To the point that I stopped using my sub kick.
I connected a short XLR cable to my microphone and cable tied it to one of the bungee cords, this allows me to dangle the end out of the kickport and makes for an easy connection.
If you are looking for one less thing to set up while gigging and have a smaller kit it's a no brainer. Just buy it.

Great solution for putting a mic in your kick drum
boyscout66 28.08.2017
Installed in a maple 22" kick for live gig work. Installation took about 30 mins and all the parts needed were provided.
Pros:
- High quality product. Looks like it will last at least 5 years - probably longer.
- Good value. At first sight it might seem expensive "for a bit of plastic", but it is well thought out and durable (not sure why anyone would want to pay more for the aluminium version).
- One less mic tripod to carry around!
- Will not fall off during a gig or move around.
- They say that the Shu isolates the kick drum mic from external vibrations (snare etc), providing a better sound. I have yet to verify this.
Cons.
- None.

Great system
Stephane4242 19.02.2020
I was doubtful at first but it actually works very well. However I found it very approximate to place and not easy. I had to look at a Youtube tutorial to get the concept how to place it. It's easy to say" you can do whatever you want to suit your needs" but when faced with the rubber bands and the hooks it looks a little daunting. It took me about 40 mins to install my mic inside the BD at the correct place I wanted but it was a bit of a hit and miss. I thought I would never have enough rubber band. Get ready to guess but think and plan before cutting and snipping. Other that this, it's a very cool reliable object that is saving a load of headache to whoever is doing sound engineer whether live or studio. The mic is always at the right place and that's a time saver.

Simple but effective
Jonathan2293 16.09.2015
I like consistency. When a sound engineer puts a random kick drum mic into a random position somewhere around your bass drum you never really know what sound you are going to get. The Kelly Shu lives inside my bass drum with my Kick drum mic attached so that it is always in exactly the same place every time. It's a piece of cake to fit and is cleverly isolated on little bungee chords from the inside of the bass drum.
If you are out giging a lot and you own your own Kick drum mic then this is definitely for you. Saves all that faffing around with short boom stands and because it is right inside the kick drum it doesn't pick up everything else on stage. Highly recommended.
