New series, new functions

With the Pro version, the Oxygen series from M-Audio has received an extensive update, offering not only a new design but also new connection options and features. These include Arpeggiator, Smart Chord, and Smart Scale functions as well as practical automapping. This Pro Series model is equipped with 61 velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch, 16 pads, eight assignable knobs, and nine faders. It also comes with a range of virtual instruments, so you can start producing music straight away. The Oxygen Pro Series provides users with full control over all DAW parameters, allowing them to concentrate on music creation without being distracted by the screen.

Simplified composing

The Oxygen Pro 61 has many helpful features: The internal arpeggiator can be synchronised with the DAW or used with your own clock. The Smart Chord mode enables enharmonic or custom chord voicings to be played using a single key. Smart Scale, on the other hand, simplifies the composition of harmonically perfect songs by eliminating wrong notes. In this way, only notes of the selected scale can be played. With Note Repeat, notes are repeated automatically in an individually adjustable ratio. The back panel is equipped with a five-pin MIDI output that can be used to control analogue hardware synthesizers easily, and there is also a connection for an optional sustain pedal. A Kensington MiniSaver slot serves as a physical security solution, which is especially useful in a live setting.

Easy integration

The controllers of the Oxygen Pro series are suitable for a wide range of applications - whether for live performances on stage or for recording tunes in the studio. Musicians, DJs, and producers will have a reliable companion with which to manage their virtual instruments as well as their DAW. The control of Ableton Live is particularly precise and detailed, as individual lines (scenes) can be controlled directly. The faders are linked directly to the tracks, so that the volume can be changed intuitively. The controller is well-made and the knobs and faders have a high-quality feel. Beginners in the field of music production will be pleased to learn that Pro Tools First and Ableton Live Lite are included in the scope of delivery. After all, the Oxygen series is considered to be the versatile control centre of a software-based music studio.

About M-Audio

M-Audio is one of the best-known manufacturers of MIDI controllers, audio and MIDI interfaces, monitor boxes, and other studio equipment. Founded in 1988 under the name Midiman, the company quickly made a name for itself, always focusing on practical features and value for money. With the successful Oxygen series, M-Audio was instrumental in establishing the genre of MIDI controller keyboards for DAW-based studios. For a time, M-Audio was part of Digidesign / Avid. The brand is now part of the inMusic group and its success story continues to this day.

All aboard

The transport buttons for Start, Stop, Record, and Cycle as well as the numerous controls are tailored to music production with a DAW. It is possible, for example, to control the volume of eight tracks and the master with the nine faders, while the knobs operate effects and the pads trigger clips. The latter are backlit in RGB colours and thus offer a well-organised, easy-to-read control overview. This makes it easier to visualise the status of the clip in question. Besides this, they are perfect for fingerdrumming while beatmaking. Two special keys allow you to switch between different octave positions. In addition, the keyboard can be split so that a maximum of two zones can be set up, and MIDI-CC commands can also be controlled.

Budget friendly controller with aftertouch
Petar Jovanovic 10.12.2020
With this 61 keys controller you get velocity sensitive semi-weighted keys, aftertouch, smart chord and scale mode, split zone and DAW integration with all major DAW software including FL Studio. On top of that you get tons of software and other goodies to get you started learning, producing and playing music.
The build quality is good and everything is laid down nicely. The ergonomic distribution of sliders and buttons is spot on. The keys are nice and responsive.
There are only two cons:
One is that the sliders and buttons are not quite precise but they do work smoothly and in 0-127 range. The other is that the keys have no RGB lights for smart chords and scale feature. Its not a big deal but it would be nice to actually see them.
Overall this is a quality build and budget friendly controller with aftertouch and as such well worth the price in my hones opinion.

A
My first MIDI Keyboard and I love it!
Asutosh 05.07.2024
I have been wanting to buy this exact keyboard, but the stocks in India kept getting sold out when I wanted to buy this. Thomann gave me my best shot to buy this and the what can I say about this keyboard! Its perfect for my use cases. I use FL Studio and the keyboard has a preset for FL studio, thought some buttons didn't work in the beginning, once they are set as a preset, everything "just works". Again, I love it!

Few things you might want to consider before buying it:
1. Keybed feel: If you want the best keybed feel in this range, this keyboard may not be there, however, the keyboard has aftertouch, that no other company gives at this price range. Still if you want the best keybed feel, I'd suggest save some more money and go for the Hammer 88 by M-Audio.
2. No Infinte knobs: The knobs are not infinite rotating, but its not a game breaker, the workflow and performance delivered surpasses this con.
3. Clicky-Clacky buttons: The buttons present on this keyboard are made with plastic and make clicky sound when pressed. Again, its not a game breaker compared to the feature, but if it will really disturb you or anyone else nearby. I'll suggest Arturia Keylab 61 Essentials.

Other options in this range:
1. Arturia KeyLab 61 Essential
2. Native Instrument Komplete Kontrol A61
3. Novation Impulse 61
4. Novation Launchkey 61 Mk3

If you don't mind the cons I mentioned above, this keyboard is perfect for you. Go for it!

J
Nice keyboard, let down by some minor issues.
JohnBt 27.08.2024
The keyboard itself is quite nice, pleasant to play. The feature set is good for this price point. Having sliders, pots, pads and transport controls in reach means less reaching for mouse and (computer) keyboard. Overall the device feels fairly robust. DAW support is good, with a large number of options supported. Software is basic, but provides what you need.

Some reviews state the action is quite heavy, but keyboard and pad sensitivity can be tuned in the preset editor software.

Octave, transport, settings, and other buttons are quite "clicky" and don't feel like they'll last as long as the keyboard. I hope I'm wrong. I prefer Novation's soft-touch controls for transport etc. That said, buttons are responsive and I have not had any mis-clicks.

There is a "Vegas mode" style sleep mode which cannot be disabled - as I understand it, sleep mode includes a screensaver to prevent burn-in on the OLED screen, so cannot be turned off. Depending on your setting, this may not be appropriate - this mode is heavy on flashing lights.

An annoyance is, when the device returns from sleep mode, it may not return to the same state it was in before (depending on the mode you use - I think this will not effect DAW mode at all). In my case, I use a custom preset and enable "MIDI" mode. The device leaves "MIDI" mode when sleep mode is stopped. Re-enabling this mode is a single button press, so this is not enough to warrant a return, but I think it needs mentioning. I contacted M-Audio about this, and they have logged the issue, so hopefully a future firmware update remedies it.

You will struggle to find better at this price-point. I am happy with the keyboard and plan to get many years of use from it.

This is my first Midi Keyboard. Settled for it after a bit of research. My expectations were meet. Plays great with so many features that I am yet to fully explore.
