New series, new functions

With the Pro version, the Oxygen series from M-Audio has received an extensive update, offering not only a new design but also new connection options and features. These include Arpeggiator, Smart Chord, and Smart Scale functions as well as practical automapping. This Pro Series model is equipped with 49 velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch, 16 pads, eight assignable knobs, and nine faders. It also comes with a range of virtual instruments, so you can start producing music straight away. The Oxygen Pro Series provides users with full control over all DAW parameters, allowing them to concentrate on music creation without being distracted by the screen.

Simplified composing

The Oxygen Pro 49 has many helpful features: The internal arpeggiator can be synchronised with the DAW or used with your own clock. The Smart Chord mode enables enharmonic or custom chord voicings to be played using a single key. Smart Scale, on the other hand, simplifies the composition of harmonically perfect songs by eliminating wrong notes. In this way, only notes of the selected scale can be played. With Note Repeat, notes are repeated automatically in an individually adjustable ratio. The back panel is equipped with a five-pin MIDI output that can be used to control analogue hardware synthesizers easily, and there is also a connection for an optional sustain pedal. A Kensington MiniSaver slot serves as a physical security solution, which is especially useful in a live setting.

Easy integration

The controllers of the Oxygen Pro series are suitable for a wide range of applications - whether for live performances on stage or in the studio. Musicians, DJs, and producers will have a reliable companion with which to manage their virtual instruments as well as their DAW. The control of Ableton Live is particularly precise and detailed, as individual lines (scenes) can be controlled directly. The faders are linked directly to the tracks, so that the volume can be changed intuitively. The controller is well-made and the knobs and faders have a high-quality feel. Beginners in the field of music production will be pleased to learn that Pro Tools First and Ableton Live Lite are included in the scope of delivery. After all, the Oxygen series is considered to be the versatile control centre of a software-based music studio.

About M-Audio

M-Audio is one of the best-known manufacturers of MIDI controllers, audio and MIDI interfaces, monitor boxes, and other studio equipment. Founded in 1988 under the name Midiman, the company quickly made a name for itself, always focusing on practical features and value for money. With the successful Oxygen series, M-Audio was instrumental in establishing the genre of MIDI controller keyboards for DAW-based studios. For a time, M-Audio was part of Digidesign / Avid. The brand is now part of the inMusic group and its success story continues to this day.

All aboard

The transport buttons for Start, Stop, Record, and Cycle as well as the numerous controls are tailored to music production with a DAW. It is possible, for example, to control the volume of eight tracks and the master with the nine faders, while the knobs operate effects and the pads trigger clips. The latter are backlit in RGB colours and thus offer a well-organised, easy-to-read control overview. This makes it easier to visualise the status of the clip in question. Besides this, they are perfect for fingerdrumming while beatmaking. Two special keys allow you to switch between different octave positions. In addition, the keyboard can be split so that a maximum of two zones can be set up, and MIDI-CC commands can also be controlled.

Good, not great because...
RobSteijger 17.01.2023
After almost 2 years of using, although not on a daily basis, it's about time for a review.

Good:
- Nice keybed, nice pads, with adjustable sensitivity.
- A 5 DIN MIDI-out, so you can use the Pro 49 for controlling other MIDI-gear (I use it for my Minilogue, which has smaller en fewer keys), without a DAW.
- The software editor that enables you to programm all controllers (thus which CC they send), which can be handy for controlling other MIDI gear that lacks knobs, but...

Not so good (but this applies to 99% of all controller keyboards):
- No endless knobs. Why are there so many controllers without endless knobs? I've ordered the AKAI MPD 226 júst for its endless encoders (review following shortly - or well, within 2 years). If my Pro 49 had them I'd be sorted for the rest of my life.

I've only used my Pro 49 with MPC Beats, which required some mapping (the factory preset in MPC Beats didn't work, and this was not caused by the Pro 49), so I can't commend yet on it's compatibility/use with other DAWs.

Thanks to Thomann, again, for the great service: my Pro 49 came with a malfuctioning fader. All was solved.

K
Overall a good product

I use my midi with FL studio, the integration is amazing. Easy to set up following the user guide. The keys feel solid. The only thing is the screen is too small and doesn't have many functions. Overall good buy for the price.

V
Review after 16 months of use
Vincent3492 08.06.2022
Pros
Semi weighted keys feel great
Addition of trigger pads are a nice touch
Built in arp works really well

Cons
Screen is woeful. Octave indicator is burned into it as I leave the keyboard on all the time. This became apparent after about 6 months.
Suffering from pitch drift, the reason I replaced my old oxygen 49 key. Really disappointed this is an issue again.

Would probably look at other brands in the future as m-audio controller keys are supposed to suffer from random pitch drift and has been known for quite some time based on some articles I read online. Had really high hopes for this controller and really enjoyed using it when it worked.

a
One of the if not the best in the price category.
ankvcs 30.03.2021
Great very funtioncal midi controller with corners cut for price but that does not affect performance.

The keybed (coming from piano) feels quite good given that it is a midi controller without fully weighted keys. For the price its keybed is the best I believe.

Only major con that is not as obvious as some knobs being not as nice as on 800EUR keyboards is the aftertouch- you have to press in quite hard and its really hard to manipulate it- it easily goes to the max and its hard to vary it.
