A truckload of effects in a single pedal

The Mooer Preamp Model X2 effects pedal offers high-quality simulations of electric guitar and bass amplifiers as well as speaker cabinets based on impulse responses (IRs). Inside its compact metal housing, which features two footswitches as well as five control knobs for gain, volume, treble, middle, and bass, the Mooer Preamp Model X2 accommodates an exceptional variety of amps and speaker cabs that guitar and bass players will hardly find in a real studio. This sophisticated simulator pedal comes with the free Mooer Studio editor software, which allows users to directly access the comprehensive range of impulse responses offered by Mooer, load additional third-party or other users' IRs online, and even store an entire customised signal chain comprising amp, speaker cab, microphone, and preamp as an IR file for use live on stage or in the rehearsal room later on. And the good news is: The Mooer Preamp Model X2 with a power adapter comes at the price of just one high-quality overdrive pedal.

Lightweight pedal, heavy sounds

Its affordable price, extremely low weight of just 334g, and gig bag-friendly dimensions make the Mooer Preamp Model X2 effects pedal the go-to choice for guitarists who want to effortlessly play an authentic British or American full-stack amp sound without straining their wallet - or their back! Whether it is placed between the guitar and the amp in the conventional way, operated in the amp's FX loop, or directly connected to the PA, the Mooer Preamp Model X2 ensures maximum flexibility for all setup and routing requirements. It is also incredibly easy to use: All users have to do is select and switch on or off one of the 14 user presets via the two footswitches, adjust the distortion level using the Gain control knob, fine-tune their sound using the Treble, Mid, and Bass control knobs, and finally store their settings by pressing and holding the Save button. Loading and configuring amp and cab IR files is also an absolute breeze thanks to Mooer's free Studio editor software, which only requires a connection between the Mooer Preamp Model X2 pedal and a computer via the integrated USB interface.

From Garage Rock to Top 40

The Mooer Preamp Model X2 is the ideal choice for budget-conscious guitar and bass players who want to take their first steps into the fascinating world of cutting-edge IR-based amp and cab simulations. Thanks to its sophisticated high-resolution impulse responses, users can easily cover a wide range of musical genres without the need to buy and transport an entire arsenal of real amps and speaker cabs. Top 40 band guitarists will be thrilled by the sonic options provided by the 14 amp simulations, while Garage Rock bands will be easily won over by the Mooer Preamp Model X2's excellent performance in the rehearsal room alongside its great sound quality, versatility, lightweight design, and price. And analogue tube amp fans will be happy to hear that this pedal also allows their beloved vintage setup to be preserved in the form of an impulse response, which can be effortlessly taken along and played through just about everywhere. This means that the real amps, speaker cabs, and mics can remain in the studio for use in high-end recording setups that require the finest nuances of a sound to be brought out.

About Mooer

Mooer is based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen and has been making products for guitarists since 2010, which include compact single pedals through to multi-effects units and compact amplifiers. The company initially produced a range of mini pedals before making perhaps its most significant breakthrough in 2016 with the sophisticated Ocean Machine delay pedal, which was designed in collaboration with Devin Townsend. Mooer's product range now also includes solutions that feature amp modelling, IR-based speaker simulation, and matching equalisers, and the company's focus remains firmly on the use of digital technology.

Authentic amp sims for practice, rehearsal, and performance

Unlike conventional stage setups, the Mooer Preamp Model X2 will reliably deliver a consistent sound quality throughout the entire live gig, since the desired sounds are perfectly preserved in impulse responses that cannot be affected by a mic slipping out of place or interference from the drums. What is more, the simulator pedal is generally less susceptible to malfunctions than a complex signal chain comprising an amp, speaker cab, and mic, which is particularly important for bands playing live on stage and in the rehearsal room. The Mooer Preamp Model X2 provides a convenient, back-friendly, and stress-free way to pack the sound of one's favourite vintage amp and wall of speaker cabs into impulse responses for use in a rehearsal room in conjunction with a PA or a compact transistor amp. And those who also want to enjoy a full-stack sound while jamming and practising at home or on the go will find the Mooer Preamp Model X2 the ideal budget-friendly, lightweight, and easy-to-use tool to complement their pedalboard.

In the spotlight: Amp and cab impulse responses

The Mooer Preamp Model X2 uses impulse response technology for sound generation, which means that an audio impulse (usually a short click) is sent to an amplifier's input and recorded at the output using an audio interface. The difference between the original impulse and the signal recorded on the amplifier’s output is then used to derive and generate a so-called impulse response on a computer. The impulse response comprises all the information about how the amplifier processes an audio signal. This sound profile can subsequently be applied to any given audio signal using the mathematical method of convolution. The Mooer Preamp Model X2 is compatible with all of Mooer’s impulse responses in the MNRS, GNR, and GIR formats as well as with other third-party IR formats, which ensures access to an extremely large variety of sounds in a continuously growing library.

For what it is and what is competing with it's a 5 star product

The idea is that amps are heavy and cannot be carried around, so these pedals exist.
So I chose this pedal because I wanted to make my pedalboard capable of playing ampless for the usual situations (no amp available, or can't use one because it's too loud at that time etc) without abbandoning the rest of my analog pedals.
I simply remove the channel footswitch for amps that i keep on my board and put this on. I ve tried other preamps before they were fine except for the cabinet simulation, the reason I chose this one is that it comes with (and can load) impulse responses so I don't need a second pedal for it.
As with most digital amp emulations, the distorted sounds can be very acceptable, the cleans are not as good as an amplifier (quite compressed but with not much more sustain). The actual sounds are nice, but the differences between the models are mostly around the eq, you can easily match the sounds between them with adjusting the pedal.

Mooer mnrs:
It has the ability to "capture" an amp , but nothing like a kemper, : you need to use the ge labs app that is only available for ios. I used an old iphone to do that (with a cable that costs 50 euros extra ) and I would say it does capture the essence but only the instant that the amp is set up at that time , meaning if you capture it with everything at 12 (or the settings you choose) it ll sound very close to that, but if you increase the gain on the pedal, or the mids or any eq then it adds it's own, and the result is that all the amp models do not sound that much different after all. It has some eq adjustment while the profiling is being captured but it's not very easy to match. It can capture the preamp only or the whole amp (with the cabinet- if you use a microphone as well),
So all in all, it has capabilites unlike any other on this category, and it's a great backup to have. If you re used to tube amps like me, then no way this or any pedal like this can ever replace one, but if you want the occasional portability a multieffect unit offers but hate the multieffect menus, well, this probably is the one to put on your pedalboard

EDIT: Just a heads up, once the cabinet simulation is on, the volume rises a few db and may clip pedals after it if they can't support line level. This includes the ir's that come with also the majority of 3d party IRs. The solution for this is to edit an IR by lowering around 12-15db.
I use cubase, simply load the IR in wav format as audio, lower the output volume by 15db and export it and then load it to the pedal

I am a big fan of the mooer equipment. This is what u use as a backup to my kemper. The versatility is mind blowing. I still think the secret to modelers is the I.r and the ability to load your own I.r makes this a winner. Cheers guys…

''For what it is.....''....what does that means?
santu ronzu 24.08.2024
Don't know for what it is, all I know is that this is a KILLER product. I have been playing as a pro for about 20 years, this pedal can load killer GELABS captures, for free. I have all the best amp modeller software on my desktop, this amp sim is every bit as good, it can do anything you need, from jazz to metal and all in between. The built in choices are few, but in this day and age of totally unnecessary consumerism, this is a pro, not a cons. I only need a few killer sounds, and this pedal delivers them effortlessly.

All the details of the tones are of the highest quality, don't think that just because it's low cost, that it sounds less good than these overpriced solutions we all know....rather, it's those other solutions that are totally overpriced.

Throw this pedal in your gigbag and you are guaranteed killer tones, simply and easily, and you keep more money in your pockets.
