JM
More than an LFO
Jon Mayo 04.03.2024
It's two LFO/VCOs and they can cross modulate for some really wild effects. It does go into audio rates and has an exponential input, but it doesn't stay in tune over a very wide range of octaves. You can use it for sounds that span over a single octave, like Tom-toms.
Build quality is good. The knobs wiggle a little bit but not too bad. The metal plate is very robust. The push buttons feel solid and don't get stuck.
There are lots of ways to use this module, it's more than an LFO.

While it's feature packed, those features are barely explained anywhere. I could tell you what I found out but then I would be doing their job for free. Rides in the storm seems to make great bang-for-your-buck modules, and in formats that make sense to me, but I fear one of the reasons they're so cheap is because they don't care to make proper manuals or respond to emails with questions...

I spoke to the owner at his stand at dutch modular fest and he did answer my questions then, so I can assure you he does really know what he's doing with these designs. They're behringer prices but with proper, thought out, original designs.

I'm still debating whether to go for the quad envelope generator, but I have no regrets buying this one.

It sounds great but...

the knobs are so delicate that tuning can be a bit tiresome and the labelling on the front could be better - I was constantly getting confused with the layout, even with such a small faceplate.

Sounds great and provides a lot of possibilities. Works well as both LFO and audio rate VCO. The cross-modulation introduces very interesting sounds. The wave shape options are quite flexible. The sample and hold feature can't be configured that much, but is still useful.

The controlls are a bit wobbly and it gets hard to tune it precisely, especially when the controlls get incredibly sensitive during the cross-modulation. The four buttons don't give much indication about their state. You need to look closely to see if they're pressed or not. There's two LED indicators of the oscillators' frequencies, which is very useful for LFO rates.
