Great RC EQ
crimsalabim 27.06.2017
As I've never written a gear review and Thomann ask me to be the first to review the EQ I put in a little effort and lined up all my outboard EQs for a shootout.
I've compared it to to other RC EQs (Great River 32EQ) and my TAC Scorpion desk EQ.
Furthermore I had some LC EQs lined up (Neve 33115, Siemens W295b & AML EZ1073).
The SSL doesn't have the sweet top end of a Neve or W295b but of all EQs in this test it's the best one to bring up an instrument in a dense mix. Inductor EQs always seem to take up a little more space (sonically) and sound better on solo instruments but the SSL can add definition and "grip" to any signal.
It's a little less hi-fi than the Great River but out of the six EQs tested it's the best tool for clarity if that's what's required.
The pots are tiny but that's unavoidable for a 500 series EQ with these features crammed in.
Great tool - I might buy some more units in the future.

Perfect surgical eq

If I had places left in my rack I'd get three or four more. Before hitting compression you can polish your sound and prepare it for rounding and sweetening. You can use a very strict Q for freq nailing then smooth it to get what you want. Not good for final embellishment, not its job.

Great EQ!
Chiren 04.05.2020
I really love this EQ. I have a lot of instruments in my music. With plugins it's hard to give each instrument it's own space. With the 611 it's easy! And much faster. Together with my SSL Bus compressor and Fusion, I have that great SSL sound on my mixes.

they cut a few corners

I didn't like the sound, but since everyone else here seems to love it, I suppose it's just a matter of taste. I found it unnatural: the smallest correction quickly made the sound sound tweaked.

The build quality felt inferior to most series 500 modules. Just considering weight, it's the lightest module I've had in my hands. The tiny knobs felt flimsy in my hand too. I suppose it's still sturdy enough, but I see why this one is much cheaper than the API or Neve equivalent. In that regard, you can't complain.
