Entry into the world of alto saxophones

An alto saxophone for beginners is considered to be particularly good if it offers good sound dynamics and rests comfortably in your hands. The Thomann "Antique" alto saxophone definitely fulfils these criteria and also scores points with an extremely good price-performance ratio. This saxophone also makes a convincing case thanks to a balanced intonation in all registers, a very good response, and a warm sound rich in overtones. The body, S-bow, and mechanism are made of brass and have been given an antique finish. An adjustable thumb rest, meanwhile, ensures enhanced playing comfort. In addition to the instrument, the scope of delivery includes a case, a mouthpiece, and a strap.

Eb-compatible notation required

The Eb alto saxophone is part of the saxophone family, the other main members of which are the soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone. The term "alto" stands for the vocal range. The Eb alto saxophone is a transposing instrument, which means that a C played on this saxophone corresponds to an Eb on the piano or the guitar. The C played on an Eb alto saxophone therefore always sounds a major sixth lower. This is why notes for instruments in C tuning are not compatible with Eb alto saxophones (separate notation is available, however).

Ideal for popular styles of music

A beginner's saxophone should be designed in a manner that enables well-intonated and dynamic playing in all registers. The intonation possibilities shouldn’t be too extensive, but they should not be too limited either. The mechanism has to be smooth, and the valves should be easy to operate. The Thomann "Antique" saxophone fulfils all of these requirements and therefore represents a good starting point. Whether you are a beginner or coming to the Eb alto sax from another instrument, you will be very well served by the Thomann "Antique" saxophone thanks to its convincing price-performance ratio. But this alto saxophone can also be used as an affordable back-up instrument. Thanks to its warm sound rich in overtones, it is particularly interesting for popular music styles.

From a beginner's model to an open-air instrument

Until fairly recently, it was still hard to find a good entry-level alto saxophone, but those days are thankfully over, as Thomann now offers the perfect solution with the "Antique" alto saxophone. Thanks to their pleasant playing feel and sound characteristics as well as their reasonable prices, Thomann saxophones have become more and more popular in recent years. With the "Antique", you get a solid entry-level model that can be used in many musical fields. This alto saxophone is suitable for learning the instrument and can also serve as a second instrument during bad weather situations at open-air gigs.

Awesome instrument for the price
Rodrigo Saraiva 04.03.2018
I was looking for an used Alto Saxophone for restart learning it again. Many years ago I started learning horn with a Weril Alto Sax. Then I found this one, and until now I have no regrets. It is a beautiful instrument, with a gently mechanics, all the keys run smoothly and quietly. Much, much better than Weril. All note that I played until now, sounds good. The tuning is great. There is no leaks. The mouthpiece is good. To start learning is a good one. It comes with two reeds from Thomann. It is good too. I don't know why it comes with gloves, but it isn't a problem :). The case is awesome too, very safe for all pieces.
There is two things that I don't like:
- the strap is the worst one, it doesn't have a lock, so if you lift the instrument it will release, and it has a big risk to drop it
- It came with 2 plastic cover ups for the keys loose, unglued. But it is easy to solve. I just fixed it with some glue.
I am 97% satisfied with this Saxophone. The pictures cannot show for real how beautiful is this instrument. And it really really sounds good.

Very well looking
Xuszmi 23.05.2018
As my first saxophone to begin learning, it serves the purpose very well. The finish is great, the sound could be a bit better, but so far I am very happy with the purchase. It would be very useful to have a second reed of each, in case the one being used breaks.

Ok sax, does the job
cjrosa 07.12.2020
Easy sax to play for a beginner.

As a pro, I bought this instrument to have an extra one in case I need one. Came with a little problems here and there, a few sticky keys, a missing piece of cork. No cleaning package as of picture, but that could be placed for a few extra euro.
In general, a good purchase, but I'd hope the sax didn't need any maintenance the first time i played on it.
