A bass that won't let you down

Blues, Rock & Roll, and Rockabilly bass players are known for their eyecatching stage antics - including slap-bass techniques, spinning the instrument around, and some very acrobatic shape-throwing - which can prove to be too much for upright basses that are constructed and set up in the conventional manner. Enter the Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass: This instrument features a sufficiently stable construction to allow it to stand up to the rough-and-tumble of Rock & Roll shows and comes properly set up with the right strings for the job. Equally important considering the musical application for which it is intended is that this bass features a cool all-white finish, a world away from the rather staid image of classical double basses.

Comprehensive features at a budget price

The Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass is constructed in the popular 3/4 size and features a laminated basswood body. A particularly noteworthy feature - and one that is anything but typical at this price point - is the ebony fingerboard, and the spike (endpin) is height-adjustable and stable enough to withstand even rough use. The machine heads are mounted on individual brass plates, and the bass comes strung with steel strings as standard, which allow it to be played with the composite bow that is included in the scope of delivery alongside a gig bag. A custom setup to provide the player's desired string action is also carried out at Thomann's stringed instrument workshop.

Cool and sturdy

The Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass is sure to find favour with players who are turned off by the look of "traditional" double basses, while its affordable price will particularly attract beginners from the fields of Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, and of course Rockabilly. However, more experienced bassists on the hunt for a sturdy and visually appealing second bass will find what they are looking for here as well, and its laminated construction means that it is sufficiently insensitive to moisture and temperature changes to allow it to be played in the pedestrian precinct or the park.

About Thomann string instruments

Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann’s product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann string instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.

Built to play

The Thomann Rockabilly Double Bass has a look that will make players want to get out and perform right away, and it will be at home wherever looking great is as important as sounding great - whether it's on stage, in the street, or in the park. As mentioned above, its laminated construction makes this bass particularly resistant to wind, moisture, and sun (not to mention high-heeled shoes). Of course, the Rockabilly Bass is also an excellent choice for players just starting out on the instrument, and these players should be sure to request a low string action when ordering the bass to make those first notes as easy to play as possible. Needless to say, finding a good teacher will also be extremely helpful!

Great sounding bass that can take a beating
azureharri 04.11.2020
Pros:
-Has survived 5 years of being thrown around, knocked over, carried all over the country and generally mistreated. Still plays exactly as well as it did when it came out of the box (which is to say: well).
-Sounds generally very good for such a cheap instrument.
-Eye-catching design.
-The included bow is of pretty good quality.
-Low action allows some pretty quick movement. Used it for some very fast syncopated mathcore stuff and had no problems.
Cons:
-The bridge buzzed a little out of the box. Some filing fixed this, although I later replaced it with an adjustable one.
-The strings are a little harsh, so I'd recommend shelling out for some decent ones as they last for years.
-The E string is quite quiet compared to the others, which has caused issues for me when recording it.

Required 20 minutes of love to shine.

After I received it, unboxed, it required some time to be spent to clean it from factory dust and some glue that was left. It's much better then expected, solid, sturdy, great sounding. The fretboard is ebony, which you wouldn't expect on entry level instrument. Price to quality ratio is very, very good. It's easy to play, good sounding, classy looking, inexpensive bass. I use mine to slap - just like the old style DJ Fontana or Willie Dixon did. The finish is pretty good (I've seen more expensive basses with worse paint job than that).

Great starter

This Bass is a great bass if you are just starting out on Double bass or making the leap from E-bass. I've upgraded the bridge, strings and bought a pick up and it's great now. I gig with it every weekend and it never lets me down. It's also survived a few bangs and knocks.

It looks very good and sounds good too. No notches on the steeple, so it can during the game to move downward. You have to do it yourself, with a file.
