Doepfer's first thru-zero FM oscillator

It has been a long time coming but Doepfer develop their products carefully and always in response to user feedback. Up to last year (2014) their oscillator range was very restricted (to say the least - there were only 2 and one of those was discontinued a couple of years ago!). However Dieter Doepfer has now gone oscillator-mad and introduced a whole host of different ones with various features. A number of manufacturers have produced thru-zero FM capable modules for Eurorack in recent years. When Dieter annnounced he was making one it was always going to be good. This one does not disappoint and is very versatile, with quadrature outputs (two sine waves 90 degrees out of phase with each other) although I wish he would publish more guidance on how to get get the best from it. Mind you, modular is all about experimentation isn't it? And this special edition in that gorgeous blue colour is irresistible at such a good price. Excellent value for money IMHO.

I've only had this a short time but it is a very nice bit of kit. Excellent sounding Oscillator, also very useful for modulation as you have the thru-zero function so can get all kinds of sounds from the NW-1 by using this to modulate the spectrum or travel.
The Blue and white livery make it easier to see in Dim lighting too!

Wenn man Modular unterwegs ist,kommt man an den Quadrature Thru Zero VCO nicht herum.

Schon nach den ersten Stöpselorgien haute mich dieser VCO um. Er ist unberechenbar, von sanft und unscheinbar bis grell scharf und böse. Der A-110-4 ist das was man sich als Modularianer wünscht.

Anfänglich erschien er mir als geradlinig sauberer Sinus VCO. Mir war klar das er das nicht sein wollte, somit fütterte ich den XFM Eingang mit einem weiteren VCO und dann kam Strom ins Herz dieses VCO's der dunklen Seite der Macht....das Teil rockt dich weg.

Angefixt von den wunderbaren Soundfahrten belegte ich den LFM Eingang mit einem weiteren VCO, Wumms und ich dachte der Kölner Dom läutete mir durchs heimische Studio...fetteste Glocken in einer schier unglaublichen Pracht.

Er neigt teilweise zum übersteuern, also Vorsicht, der kann echt böse die Membranen kitzeln...puuuh !

Wer auch gern was für's Auge im Rack hat,dem sei der Blau eingefärbte und mit weissen Knöpfen versehene VCO empfohlen.

Un son au rendez-vous

J'ai acheté ce module en pensant améliorer les fonctionnalités du frequency shifter A-126-2. J'ai constaté que la plage de réglage du potentiomètre XTune n'était pas assez large pour passer d'un état sans effet (oscillation nulle) à une fréquence suffisamment élevée. Il faut donc manipuler deux potentiomètres (XTune et LFrq) pour obtenir une plage suffisamment large, ce qui n'est pas très pratique. Une autre limitation du module est l'impossibilité de contrôler la modulation en fréquence linéaire ou exponentielle avec CV. Le suivi oct/v n'était pas fiable au début, au-delà de deux octaves ; en calibrant P7 a présent le module suit 7 octaves sans problème. Malgré ces soucis/limitations, le son est de qualité.
